SHEBOYGAN COUNTY (WFRV) — The PGA Championship is getting ready to tee off next week at Whistling Straits. The tournament expects to bring tens of thousands of golf fans from around the country to see the final major of the year.
Sheboygan County’s 1,800 hotel rooms were booked more than a year in advance, but there is another option for fans needing a place to stay: renting rooms at homes near the course.
Some “PGA Landlords” chose to leave town and decided to rent out their entire home. Others are staying for the tournament and renting out rooms instead.
“The house is empty…I’ve got the room so I though I would try renting it out again,” Donna Willfahrt said, who is renting out rooms for the PGA Championship. “I love having people around. I’ve got the room and hope somebody can enjoy it as much as we do.”
Some rentals were ranging between $130-$425 a night. Calls for rentals even started pouring in two years ago.
“(People are) still calling,” Lisa Deblaey said from Castino Lakeview Mansion. “We had some pop star call to stay, but it was already booked.”
The owners would not say what the rate was to rent out the mansion, but said it rented for upwards of $25,000 for the week.
“With having so many bedrooms and bathrooms we really can accommodate about 25 people in the main house,” Deblaey said.
Along with making some extra money, locals are looking forward to creating memories.
“The camaraderie, all the people coming together from all over the country…I think it is amazing,” Deblaey said.
Willfahrt is crossing her fingers her rooms will be rented, and already has plans for the profits.
“We are planning a big 50th wedding anniversary next year so it would pay for that,” she said.
