PHOENIX – A new shop in Central Phoenix is challenging Arizona’s metaphysical community with an occult shop dedicated to the practices of Voodoo and Hoodoo.
Through a smokey door sits an old-world occult shop, indulging in the world of Voodoo and Hoodoo. Zombi Apothecary and Conjure Company is an “intersection of different Afro-Caribbean traditions.”
First, a quick lesson on the difference between Voodoo and Hoodoo:
Voodoo, or Vodou, is a religion practiced by an estimated 60 million people around the world. Hoodoo, is a mixture of beliefs and African religions and is usually described as “folk magic.”
“Hoodoo is more of a way of life, and voodoo, Haitian voodoo is a religion,” said Genevieve El-Masri, Owner of Zombi Apothecary and Conjure Company.
Zombi Apothecary and Conjure Co. is a mixture of voodoo, hoodoo and other religions that provides handmade items and oils, vintage antiques and divination services such as tarot, tea leaf, shell and bone readings.
As a Cuban-American growing up in Miami, Fla., El-Masri was raised in the tradition of Santería.
“I have become a bridge between American Culture and Cuban Santería, Haitian Voodoo and all these other traditions.”Genevieve El-Masri
At Zombi Apothecary and Conjure Co., you’ll find a vast collection of curious items such as traditional hoodoo oils, gator paws for good luck, and crucifixes used in exorcisms.
There is no shortage of spirituality, but the stigma surrounding Voodoo and Hoodoo is dark, a perception that isn’t shared by El-Masri.
“When people approach Santeria and voodoo, that there is an immediate sense of fear,” said El-Masri. “They are living traditions with language, with culture, with families and community behind.”
El-Masri says all are welcome to Zombi Conjure Co., and her end goal is to always help and heal. One of the unique items El-Masri carries in her shop is Narcan kits that is used in emergency situations when an opioid overdose is suspected. She also holds monthly healing sessions of recovering addicts.
“I feel like these traditions have been about survival,” said El-Masri. “In that space, a lot of people who are seeking to survive find this to be very in resonance with their path.”
Zombie Apothecary and Conjure Company is located just east of the intersection of 12th Street and Northern Avenue.
