MTV packed in an unconventional mashup to close out the show. Post Malone and 21 Savage took to the stage to perform their hit song “Rockstar,” followed by Malone joining Aerosmith for an eccentric performance of “Dream On.”

4. Cardi B’s fake baby prank

Cardi B had (almost) everyone fooled when she opened the show holding what seemed like her baby, Kulture, in her arms. The illusion was short-lived as the rapper unraveled the blanket and revealed a “Moon Person” trophy saying, “I got a little surprise for you!”

3. Maluma heats up the show

Maluma made his VMAs debut with a performance of his song “Felices Los Cuatros,” bringing all kinds of heat to the stage and to the audience—dancing with Video of the Year winner Camila Cabello and even receiving a full-smooch from one of his background dancers.

2. Nicki Minaj defends Fifth Harmony

Presenter Tiffany Haddish seemed to take a stab at Fifth Harmony when she shouted them out through our television screens, and Nicki Minaj was quick to defend the group when she accepted the award for Best Hip-Hop Video. “Tiff, don’t be coming for Fifth Harmony, because Normani is that b****!”

1. Madonna bombs her Aretha Franklin tribute

In the most talked about moment from the show, Madonna gave an on-stage tribute to Aretha Franklin with a shockingly self-centered speech that lasted nearly seven minutes. The Queen of Pop made her tribute to the Queen of Soul almost entirely about herself. “The worst that can happen is I can go back to getting robbed, held at gunpoint, and getting mistaken for a prostitute.”
