Arizona shelter drops breed labels and focuses on personality.
What breed is that doggy in the window? It’s likely the first question you ask when looking to adopt, but no two dogs have the same personality traits. Arizona State University’s Canine Collaboratory and the Arizona Animal Welfare League partnered to find a better way to find homes for shelter dogs here in the valley. The answer? Say goodbye to breed discrimination. Inside the Arizona Animal Welfare League shelter you will no longer find labels describing available dogs by breed. Instead, they will be described by personality traits. Say hello to the friendly tan and white medium sized dog, or the small shy dog who loves squeaky toys. The Arizona-based study showed that removing breeds from shelter dogs increases the likelihood for all of the dogs to be adopted.
