Phoenix Gets Hype

Dancers from across the globe take hip-hop dance workshops from some of the biggest names in hip-hop dance at Grand Canyon University.

Phoenix, Ariz. is hosting the ‘Olympics of hip-hop dance’ at Arizona Grand Resort and GCU Arena. The USA Hip-Hop Dance Championship, World Battles, and World Hip-Hop Dance Championship are all taking place right here in the Valley. The format of the competition was actually turned into MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew when the founders of the competition took the style to television. Dancers from across the globe compete with their crews but have other opportunities to polish their skills, including dance workshops open to the public. Sunday brought in big names KK Harris, Alexander Chung, and JoJo Gomez, who are among some of the most sought after choreographers in the industry. If you missed it, don’t worry as there are more workshops to come. Friday, August 11, you can take workshops with Matt Steffanina, Popin‘ Peter, and Parris Goebel. On Saturday, August 12, you can learn moves from Request Crew, Scott Forsyth and Tight Eyez.

Phoenix has a large dance community and several crews are competing this weekend. Learn more about the competition.
