If you’ve ever been on 16th Street and Bethany Home Road in Phoenix, you’ve probably noticed THE cow. If you take a closer look, you’d realize that the cow is on the roof of Hobe Meats, but that’s not what this place is known for.
“We cater to the finest meats in the valley,” said store manager, Linsey Tweed.
Hobe Meats has been in Phoenix since 1962. They pride themselves in maintaining a small town feel, despite the city’s continued growth.
“We’re all just one big family here,” added Tweed.
Not only do they have the meat selection and elite status on Yelp, but they also have an impressive college football helmet collection.
The owner, Bret Pont, says it started as a hobby 15 to 20 years ago, until his collection grew to something more.
“I figured I’d just bring them down here where I had more room,” he said.
The collection features football helmets from colleges across the nation.
“They’re all game-worn helmets so they’re all the real deal,” Pont explained.
Pont says that having these helmets makes for great conversations.
“Pretty much everyone in Arizona is from somewhere else…everybody that comes in the store can relate to somewhere where one of these helmets are,” he said.
Some of those colleges include Oregon, Wisconsin, UCLA, USC, Clemson, Alabama, Miami, WVU, and of course, two hometown Arizona State University helmets.
If you’re all about Wildcat nation, he has a perfectly great explanation as to why there isn’t a University of Arizona helmet. He admits that a fan had been asking him about it for years, and so he finally caved in and sold it.
“So, now I’m on the hunt for another U of A helmet” he said.
