Don’t Let Your Holiday End In Flames

Almost half of all house fires are caused by cooking. Don’t let your holiday dinner end with a 9-1-1 call.  Follow these tips from Scottsdale Fire Division Chief Kerry Swick to make sure your turkey doesn’t go up in flames.

Many of us have deep fryers. They cut cooking time in half but can also be a major fire hazard. Tip number one: Your fryer should be no hotter than 350 degrees. The most common problem is overfilling oil. Too much oil can spill over onto the flame below. Next, make sure your turkey is completely defrosted. Any water will violently react with the oil. Keep this in mind in case your fryer does happen to catch fire. Don’t use water to put out a grease fire. Instead, get everyone out of the way and immediately call 9-1-1.
