PHOENIX – A woman who licked a tub of ice cream and returned it to the freezer in a grocery store has been identified by police and now faces charges by the Juvenile Justice System.
If you have social media, you have probably seen this viral video. You might even be one of the 28,000 users who retweeted it.
The video was first posted to Twitter where the woman happily takes the tub of Blue Bell ice cream, licks the entire top of the treat, and then laughs as she returns the tub to the freezer. The reported boyfriend behind the camera is heard egging on the act.
Lufkin Police and Fire identified the woman after finding security footage and narrowing down her username on social media. The suspect is a minor and will face charges put in place by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
In a previous report by CNN, police say the woman may be charged for a second-degree felony. For tampering with a consumer product, she could face up to 20 years in prison and pay a fine up to $10,000. Police have not said if this charge will change due to the suspect’s age.
Luckily, the store was identified as a Walmart in Texas and the suspected contaminated tub of ice cream has been removed from their shelves.
Blue Bell Creameries responded to what they call a “malicious act of food tampering” with a statement on their website.
“Our staff recognized the location in the video, and we inspected the freezer case. We found a Tin Roof half gallon that appears to have been compromised. Based on security footage, the location and the inspection of the carton, we believe we may have recovered the half gallon that was tampered with. Out of an abundance of caution, we have also removed all Tin Roof half gallons from that location. “
This is another example of how social media is all fun and games until it isn’t.
The suspect’s boyfriend who was also at the scene is an adult. It is unclear if he will also face charges. The investigation is ongoing.
